P4BA SUPPORTS CONSERVATIVES

SPECIAL ELECTION - TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 2026

Democrats won the Governor's race, won a majority in the Virginia House, and a majority in the Virginia Senate.  Now they want to overturn the will of the people and redistrict congressional maps in Virginia.

Virginia’s constitution allows redistricting only once every ten years.  That happened in 2020.  Any change requires a constitutional amendment. The Democratic-led push to bypass the established bipartisan commission is a "power grab", plain and simple.  As much as Democrats want to cry "A Threat To Democracy", their efforts here are nothing but a plan to unfairly monopolize congressional districts with newly gerrymandered maps.

This effort is not only against the will of the people, it's illegal. The General Assembly failed to follow the strict legal requirements for amending the state constitution. They did not adhere to the two-step rule.  They did not follow public notice requirements, and they misused a special session in order to ram their plan through.

The Two-Step Rule:

Virginia law requires a constitutional amendment to be passed in two separate legislative sessions with a general election held in between. The 2025 vote occurred after early voting had already begun for the November election, meaning it didn't happen before the election as required.

Violating Public Notice Requirements:

State law mandates that proposed amendments be published in newspapers or posted at circuit court offices at least 90 days before the referendum. Opponents successfully argued in lower courts, specifically Tazewell Circuit Court, that the state failed to meet this timeline.  The Virginia Supreme Court acknowledged this ruling and refused to issue their own ruling.  Instead, they decided to wait, leaving the whole process in legal limbo.

Misuse of a Special Session:

The redistricting resolution was introduced during a special session that was never intended for that purpose. The legislative action is clearly invalid.

More Points to Consider:

Democrats Have Betrayed Voter Intent:

In 2020, Virginia voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment to create a bipartisan redistricting commission to end the practice of "politicians picking their voters."

Abigail Spanberger added her opinion in 2019 via Twitter/X, after the Supreme Court ruled against gerrymandering saying:

"This is good news for Virginia and the country. Gerrymandering is detrimental to our democracy and it weakens the individual voices that form our electorates. Opposing gerrymandering should be a bipartisan priority."  A. Spanberger

Redrawing the maps would ignore the will of the 2020 voters who approved the current maps.

Extreme Partisan Gerrrymandering:

The Democrats proposed maps for 2026 are significantly more aggressive than the current court-ordered maps.  In quite a few states across the country, including states like Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maryland, we routinely see 40%+ of the electorate vote Republican, yet the maps are drawn in such a way that Democrats hold a majority in every Congressional District, giving them 100% of the districts in those states.  It's not equal representation.

In this case, Virginia's boundaries would be redrawn to create 10 Democratic-leaning seats and only one Republican-leaning seat in a state that has recently voted roughly 52-45% in favor of Democrats.

The "Vote Yes" side complains about unfair gerrymandering efforts "Led by Trump", then proclaims Virginia needs to do it too.  It's wrong, so we need to do the same thing?

Electoral Chaos:

Redrawing lines in early 2026 leaves candidates and voters in the dark about which district they reside in until just weeks before primary deadlines.

To accommodate the new maps, the legislature has proposed moving the state primary from June to August 2026.  Turnout is already too low in off-year elections and in non-traditional windows.  Moving our primaries to August would only decrease voter participation.
